Collaboration with University of Essex Forge Strategic Partnership in Knowledge Transfer and Applied Research

HKCT Institute of Higher Education (“HKCT”) and the University of Essex have formalised their strategic partnership through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in a virtual ceremony on 5 November 2025, initiating a new era of collaboration between the two institutions. This partnership will leverage the University of Essex’s distinguished strengths in knowledge transfer and applied research, combined with HKCT’s pivotal role as a knowledge gateway to the Greater Bay Area, to create powerful synergies between the United Kingdom and Hong Kong. The University of Essex holds a prominent position in UK higher education, ranked 23rd overall among UK universities for 2025, 10th for research power, and 1st for its knowledge transfer partnerships.

The MoU was formally signed by Professor CHAN Cheuk Hay, President and Principal of HKCT Institute of Higher Education, and Professor Frances Bowen, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Essex. The signing was witnessed by Dr Wong Chun Kau, Jolly, Governor of HKCT Institute of Higher Education, and Dr Annecy Lax, Dean of Partnerships at the University of Essex, symbolising a significant milestone in international academic cooperation.

The two institutions will establish a strategic framework to deepen their collaboration in knowledge transfer and applied research, with an impact extending from Hong Kong to the broader Greater Bay Area. Furthermore, they will foster close dialogue on academic exchange and curriculum development, with the mutual objective of enriching the student learning experience and expanding their opportunities.

This partnership represents a significant advancement in higher education collaboration within the Greater Bay Area. Both institutions are committed to aligning their efforts with the future trajectory of the economy and scientific research, and to cultivating globally competitive talent.
