Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games Gold Medalists
Meeting Over 200 Students in HKCT

It is memorable to meet the Olympic gold medalists in person! HKCT Institute of Education (HKCT) and Hong Kong Olympic Academy joined hands to hold the “Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games Mainland Olympic Athlete Delegation Visit Hong Kong” Students’ Meeting at HKCT Jockey Club Undergraduate Campus today. 5 Mainland Olympians and 1 coach who joined this event shared their experience with over 200 Hong Kong primary, secondary and tertiary students.

The Mainland Olympians Delegation of Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games was invited to visit Hong Kong for giving sports demonstrations and grand performances from the 3rd to 5th of December. One of the key events for the delegation was visiting HKCT for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games Mainland Olympic Athlete Delegation Visit Hong Kong” Students’ Meeting. 6 delegation members including ZHONG Tianshi, Women’s team sprint cycling, WANG Zhouyu, Women’s 87kg weightlifting, LI Wenwen, Women’s +87kg weightlifting, SHI Zhiyong, Men’s 73kg weightlifting, SUN Mengya, Women’s C-2500 metres canoeing and ZHANG Xiuyun, national team rowing-canoeing coach as group coach visited HKCT Jockey Club Undergraduate Campus and shared their Olympic spirit and life striving for success with Hong Kong students. 

The Students’ Meeting was organised by General Administration of Sport of China, Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR and the Government of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, co-organized by Hong Kong Olympic Academy and HKCT Institute of Higher Education. Mr YEUNG Yun Hung, Kevin, Secretary for Education, Mr WANG Kai Bo, Deputy Director of the Department of Publicity, Cultural and Sports Affairs of Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the HKSAR and Mr Wei Xin Yi, General Administration of Sport of China's representative were also invited to attend.

In giving a welcoming speech, Mr Ronnie M. C. WONG, Honorary Secretary General of Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China mentioned that the Hong Kong Sports Federation is responsible for coordinating and assisting the sports federations in Hong Kong to promote sports development. As all athletes go through the stages of being students before, they were arranged to have such a valuable and meaningful meeting with Hong Kong students. Students are the morning sun, bringing hopes to society and the country! We all look forward to one day that we could start our Olympic journey together.

Dr WONG Yau Kar, David, Chairperson, Board of Governors, HKCT Institute of Higher Education, mentioned that the national team on stage are our warriors who are not only fully competing with the world-class players, but also give respect and appreciate each other which reflected the high level of sportsmanship. They always compete with calm, fully prepared with perseverance and skills, strong mentality, and even maintain their determination in adversities. They make every effort to dream and fight for the country in order to achieve outstanding results to win honor for the country in every top event.

In order to let student deepen their understanding, several special interactive activities were included in the event. The five medalists inspired students while sharing their own experiences in training and competing in the Olympic games along with their fruitful training and preparation for the Olympic experiences. They motivated students to not only focus on success but to learn from the process. Even competing under adverse pressure, you will accept any result positively as long as you go with all your strengths. They also encourage the participants to participate in more sports activities. Except for training their body, to build their perseverance and “never give up” mindset for future challenges. 

It is seen that the participants prepared very well before the event, they exchanged their views and thoughts with the medalists in this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. They were curious about the attitude the athletes have when facing challenges and stress as world-class athletes. The participants also asked about their true feelings while grabbing the gold medal and standing on the podium. Among almost 200 questions submitted before the event by the registered participants, four best questions were shortlisted for athletes’ views and responses. Not only were the athletes invited to respond on the stage, but the students who asked the questions were also able to get a souvenir signed by the athletes. The atmosphere of the whole event was warm and lively with laughter from time to time. The participants tapped their cheering sticks to show their joy and appreciation the whole time.

During the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, the Chinese Olympic delegation won 38 gold, 32 silver medals, and 18 bronze medals and it was their first gold medal in women's 10-meter air rifle competition. The Hong Kong China Olympic delegation sent 46 athletes to the Tokyo Olympics and won 1 gold, 2 silver and 3 bronze medals in swordsmanship, swimming, table tennis, karate and track cycling, ranking 49th in the overall medal list which set a record for winning the most medals in Olympics and set a new milestone for Hong Kong.

The national team athletes and coaches interacted with more than 200 local primary, secondary and tertiary students in a warm and lively atmosphere
