Programme Objectives

This programme is dedicated to promoting practical knowledge of inclusive education and is based on the firm belief that every child has the potential to learn and deserves equal learning opportunities. Therefore, in addition to emphasising practical experience for students in kindergartens, we also arrange for teachers and students to work together in kindergartens that serve children with diverse needs. Together, they design and lead inclusive activities, which allows students to deepen their understanding of inclusive education through practice, thus achieving a balance between theory and practice.

Our goal is to cultivate early childhood educators who possess professional competence, a spirit of inclusion and innovative thinking. This will enable them to use appropriate teaching strategies in diverse learning environments to support children with different learning needs.

The programme emphasises respect for individual differences. Through a learning model that values both theory and practice, students will master the core concepts of inclusive education, strategies for supporting Special Educational Needs (SEN), and the design of diverse learning activities. Furthermore, the programme focuses on cultivating students' analytical and problem-solving skills, as well as enhancing their collaboration with parents and interdisciplinary teams. We are committed to cultivating early childhood education professionals with a forward-thinking vision and practical skills, promoting an equal and diverse inclusive learning environment, and creating appropriate growth and learning opportunities for every child.

  • The curriculum is also supported by a series of learning activity books for children to use, allowing them to learn systematically and enhance their learning effectiveness.
  • Students can further master the concepts of exploration, problem-solving, and engineering activities emphasised by STEM to integrate these into the kindergarten curriculum.

Lam Yuet Mao, Carrie
Graduate of Higher Diploma in Early Childhood Education
「My childhood dream was to become a kindergarten teacher. Due to family circumstances, I couldn't pursue further education and chose to work instead. When I had my child, I got involved with kindergarten teachers. During a parent observation activity, seeing my child's learning in class, I felt like the teacher performed magic and sensed their professionalism. Impressed by the teacher, I decided to go back to school, begin with Yi Jin and then progress to Higher Diploma in Early Childhood Education. The most profound experience during this programme was the kindergarten internship. Experiencing the daily work at a kindergarten made me incredibly happy and fulfilled. I learned many techniques and gained valuable experience from it. 」

  • Child Care Supervisor (CCS) registered with the SWD
  • Special Child Care Worker (SCCW) recognised by SWD

Why does the programme title specifically emphasise "Inclusive Education"? What are the employment advantages?
The Government is actively promoting inclusive education, leading to a surge in demand from mainstream schools for teachers possessing knowledge of special education. Not only does this programme feature subjects related to "Diverse Learning Needs" and "Inclusive Education", but it is also the only programme in Hong Kong where tutors lead students to practise inclusive education activities at Integrated Programme Centres.

Students will undertake internships in mainstream kindergartens and Kindergartens-cum-Child Care Centres participating in the Integrated Programme. By applying inclusive education concepts, students will serve mainstream pupils, those showing early signs of special educational needs (SEN) and Non-Chinese Speaking (NCS) children. This truly achieves the goal of "applying learning to practice", making our graduates more competitive in the job market with broader career prospects.

Does the programme include internships? What are the hours?
Yes. The programme provides 360 hours of internship and 84 hours of internship workshops, placing a strong emphasis on practical experience. The Institute arranges for students to intern at local kindergartens, child care centres or organisations providing inclusive education services. Through real-world working environments, students can apply classroom theories to actual teaching and accumulate valuable front-line experience.

What are the duties of a Kindergarten Teacher?
The work of a kindergarten teacher is professional and diverse, mainly covering four key areas:

  • Instructional Design: Writing lesson plans, creating teaching materials, and setting up the learning environment to inspire learning through play and activities.
  • Physical Care: Taking care of children's diet, naps, hygiene, and psychological/emotional support, as well as training self-care skills like toileting and dressing.
  • Developmental Assessment: Observing and recording children's development, compiling learning portfolios, and identifying special needs.
  • Home-School Communication: Maintaining contact with parents, addressing parenting queries, and organising major school events.

What is the difference between a Child Care Worker and a Kindergarten Teacher?

  • Child Care Worker: Serves children aged 0 to 3. The focus is on the care and nursing of toddlers, such as playing games with them, managing behaviour, and preparing snacks.
  • Kindergarten Teacher: Serves children aged 3 to 6. The main goal is to promote social, physical, and intellectual development through education and play activities. Additionally, they are required to prepare teaching materials, set curriculum content, coordinate and assist in school activities, conduct assessments, and provide parent education.

How is HKCT's Higher Diploma in Early Childhood Education different from other colleges?
Apart from possessing comprehensive professional recognition, HKCT believes that "Education is not just the transmission of knowledge, but a journey of mutual growth for both teachers and students". The programme adopts a small-class teaching mode, allowing tutors to care more attentively for each student's learning progress and build close student-teacher relationships. Through interactive teaching, individual guidance and professional sharing, students not only learn theories and techniques but also cultivate a professional attitude and self-confidence under the guidance of tutors, realising the philosophy of "teachers and students growing together".

Is this programme also available in a part-time mode? Who is it suitable for?
Yes! In addition to the full-time mode, HKCT’s Higher Diploma in Early Childhood Education is also available in a part-time mode. This is highly suitable for in-service early childhood practitioners or individuals who wish to work while studying. The part-time schedule is flexible, allowing students to gradually complete their professional qualifications without compromising their work and family commitments, thereby enhancing their competitiveness in the workplace.

Tuition fees and subsidies are to be reviewed and adjusted annually on various factors.
