[DSE Study Pathways] A Guide to Entering the Creative Industries with Zero Foundation: Design and Media Production
📅 Last Updated: May 11, 2026
DSE candidates often feel lost when facing unknown exam results and the dilemma of choosing their subjects. In fact, there is a wide range of study pathways beyond JUPAS. Today's society no longer relies solely on rote learning or a single exam transcript to determine your future. Under the mega-trend of digital transformation, possessing practical skills is often more competitive than traditional academic qualifications.
In recent years, Hong Kong has vigorously promoted the creative industries, leading to an explosive growth in market demand for talent in design and digital media production. As long as you choose the right sector, even if you have no prior experience, do not have a science background, or have not studied Visual Arts (VA), you can still break through boundaries with your practical abilities.
Surging Market Demand: Promising Prospects in Three Popular Design Sectors
When planning your educational pathway, keeping up with market trends is the key to enhancing your employability. The following three design sectors are currently in a golden period of high talent demand, providing graduates with excellent career development opportunities:
- Digital Media and Moving Image Production: Embracing the Short Video Era
We have fully entered the era of YouTubers, self-media, and short videos (Reels / TikTok). Whether it is a multinational corporation or a local boutique, high-quality videos are essential for social media marketing. The market has a massive demand for media production talent who understand scriptwriting, camera work, video editing, and post-production visual effects. Mastering these skills allows you to join television stations or advertising agencies, and gives you a significant advantage in setting up a highly flexible freelance studio.

- Visual Communication and Graphic Design: Essential for Brand IP
Hong Kong is currently at the peak of "brand upgrading", and behind every successful brand lies a strong visual communication strategy. From building brand IP and designing eye-catching social media posts to advertising layouts and physical packaging, graphic and multimedia designers with an acute market sense are highly sought after. These professionals are highly competitive in advertising, brand planning, and digital marketing.

- Interior Design: Upgrading Future Infrastructure and Living Environments
With a large number of new buildings slated for completion in Hong Kong over the next 5 to 10 years, coupled with large-scale projects like the Northern Metropolis, the demand for space planning has risen sharply. Modern consumers have increasingly high expectations for aesthetics, smart home integration, and sustainable design. Interior designers equipped with professional computer-aided design skills (such as AutoCAD and BIM) and spatial planning abilities will be highly sought after in the architecture and home design industries.

Say Goodbye to Rote Learning: How DSE Students Can Choose the Right Programmes
Given the creative industries' thirst for talent, how should DSE students equip themselves? Many worry that they are not "exam-oriented" and will struggle in the traditional education system. In reality, the design and media industries are completely different; employers value your portfolio and practical problem-solving skills far more than your ability to memorise textbooks.
Therefore, students should prioritise practice-led design programmes. Some institutions have completely abandoned traditional written exams, adopting an "exam-free" assessment model. This means you earn grades by completing design projects, shooting micro-films, or planning interior spaces. This learning model unleashes your creativity and ensures that upon graduation, you will already have a professional-standard portfolio, greatly enhancing your competitiveness for employment and university articulation.
HKCT Design Programmes and Through-Train Articulation Pathways
To seamlessly integrate with the industry, HKCT offers a series of highly competitive, exam-free, and practice-led design programmes. Students gain valuable commercial experience by collaborating with real brands and community organisations. Through a comprehensive through-train articulation pathway, we help you turn your passion into a profession:
Bachelor's Degree — Articulation to Local and Overseas Universities
The design industry places heavy emphasis on practical ability. After completing an HKCT Higher Diploma, students can use their portfolios to apply directly for bachelor's degree programmes (Year 3 entry) at local government-funded universities or overseas institutions. HKCT also has articulation agreements with overseas universities; for example, graduates of designated Higher Diplomas can articulate to the University of Sunderland and complete a degree in as little as 1 year.
Higher Diploma Programmes
Focusing on practical training and technical skills, these programmes feature no traditional written exams. Graduates can enter the creative industries directly or articulate to university (Year 3 entry), obtaining both a Higher Diploma and a Bachelor's Degree in 4 years.
DSE Entry Requirements: Level 2 in 5 subjects (including Chinese and English)
Higher Diploma in Creative Design and Media (Visual Communication)
Higher Diploma in Creative Design and Media (Moving Image)
Higher Diploma in Interior Design
Diploma
This 1-year full-time programme provides the perfect stepping stone for students who did not pass the DSE or wish to make a fresh start. Teaching from the ground up, it allows students with zero foundational knowledge to easily pick up design skills. Upon completion, students can seamlessly articulate to the Higher Diplomas listed above, and subsequently to a university degree, completing the entire pathway in 5 years.
DSE Entry Requirements: Any DSE results / Students who have completed Secondary 6
Diploma in Creative Design
The creative industries offer broad prospects and place immense value on practical ability and creativity. As long as you follow your interests, choose the right programme, and equip yourself step by step, every DSE student with a passion for design can find their golden opportunity in the digital age! Whether you aspire to be a designer building brand identities, a video producer directing visual narratives, or an interior design expert crafting ideal spaces, HKCT can provide you with the professional training and support you need.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ): DSE Design Studies and Career Pathways
Can I enrol in design programmes if I didn't study Visual Arts (VA) or science subjects in secondary school?
Absolutely. HKCT's design and media production programmes are designed for students from all backgrounds. You do not need a foundation in Visual Arts or Mathematics. The programmes teach from the absolute basics, covering aesthetic cultivation, design principles, and professional software operation to ensure students with zero foundation can master essential skills.
Is there still a chance to be admitted if my DSE results do not meet the "Level 2 in five subjects" requirement?
Yes. If your DSE results do not meet the minimum entry requirements for a Higher Diploma, you can first enrol in the 1-year Diploma in Creative Design. Upon successful completion, you can articulate directly to the design Higher Diploma programmes.
Do design programmes require taking many exams?
No. A major feature of HKCT's design programmes is that they are exam-free. Assessments are project-based and focused on professional studies. Students can concentrate on building a personal design portfolio, eliminating exam pressure while aligning with actual industry working models.
Is direct employment the only pathway after graduation? Can I progress to university?
Further study prospects are incredibly broad. Graduates of HKCT's Higher Diplomas are eligible to apply for bachelor's degree programmes at local government-funded universities or overseas universities. Armed with a strong portfolio, you can obtain a bachelor's qualification in as little as one to two years.
With so many design and media sectors, how should I choose the right specialism?
We recommend starting from your personal interests and personality:
Visual Communication: Ideal for students with a keen sense of aesthetics and meticulous attention to detail. If you enjoy drawing, layout design, brand packaging, and telling stories through images, this is your top choice.
Moving Image: Perfect for energetic students who enjoy teamwork. If you dream of directing, love filming, video editing, and are passionate about social media and short videos, the moving image sector is for you.
Interior Design: Suited for students with strong logical thinking who value the blend of practicality and aesthetics. If you enjoy hands-on space planning, making 3D models, and solving practical spatial problems, this will be your ideal choice.
