I did not study Visual Arts or Science subjects in the HKDSE. Can I still apply for the Higher Diploma in Interior Design?
Absolutely. HKCT’s Higher Diploma in Interior Design programme is specifically designed for students aspiring to join the design industry; no prior background in Visual Arts or Science is required. The programme teaches from the ground up, guiding you from the basics to advanced levels in aesthetic cultivation, spatial awareness, technical drawing, and model making. Whether you are from an Arts, Science, or Business stream, you are eligible to apply as long as you have a passion for design.
What are the entry requirements? What if my HKDSE results do not meet the standards?
The general entry requirement is Level 2 in 5 subjects in the HKDSE (including Chinese and English Language).
If your results do not meet this requirement, you can first enrol in HKCT’s one-year ‘Diploma in Creative Design'. Upon successful completion, you can progress directly to this Higher Diploma programme.
Does this programme involve many examinations? How is it assessed?
The programme features 'No Examinations', which is a unique characteristic of the Interior Design programme at HKCT.
We understand that design prioritises creativity and practical application over rote learning. Therefore, assessments are primarily project-based. Students can concentrate on creation and building their personal design portfolio. We also actively encourage students to participate in various competitions. Our students have won awards at the International Design Awards (IDA) and the Asia Pacific Interior Design Awards (APIDA), which is highly advantageous for future university articulation or employment.
Modern interior design relies heavily on software, computer-aided drawing, and visual effects. What professional software will be taught?
Indeed. To ensure graduates can transition seamlessly into the industry, this programme also places a strong emphasis on teaching a range of professional software widely used in the field, including:
AutoCAD: For drawing standard two-dimensional (2D) construction drawings, floor plans, and elevations.
SketchUp: For building three-dimensional (3D) spatial models.
VRay: For light and shadow rendering, simulating realistic lighting and material textures.
Revit: For the latest Building Information Modelling (BIM) technology.
Blender: A powerful open-source modelling tool for handling complex organic shapes and fluid simulations.
Enscape: For creating Real-time Rendering and Virtual Reality (VR) walkthroughs, allowing clients to experience the spatial design immersively.
Does the programme provide internship opportunities?
Yes. The programme is vocationally oriented, and we arrange for students to undertake 280 hours of internship at interior design firms.
Furthermore, the programme places immense value on practical application. Every year, we collaborate with various brands and organisations. Past partners include CLP Power, UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, and Chan Li Chai Medical Factory, among others. Through industry placements and practical projects, students can accumulate valuable real-world experience.
What facilities does the school provide to support students with their design projects? Do I need to buy expensive equipment?
HKCT is equipped with professional Creative Studio, furnished with iMacs and various professional design software. Additionally, the campus features 3D printers and laser cutting machines for interior design students to produce models.
To ensure students have ample space to unleash their creativity, the Creative Studio is open 24 hours a day when necessary, allowing students to complete their projects on campus with peace of mind.
