Inheriting the Spirit of Telecommunications and Shaping Hong Kong’s Digital Future

“i-Opening Class" Series: Inheriting the Spirit of Telecommunications and Advancing Hong Kong’s Livelihood—The Practice and Prospects of Telecom Spirit in Hong Kong”, organized by Hong Kong College of Technology (HKCT), was successfully held on November 12, 2025, at the HKCT Jockey Club Undergraduate Campus. The event explored the deep connection between the telecom spirit and Hong Kong’s technological development.

The lecture featured Ms YU Miao, Deputy General Manager of the Operations Management Department, Hong Kong Division, China Telecom Global Limited ("China Telecom"), a major central enterprise. Her keynote speech, titled “Inheriting the Telecom Spirit: Serving Hong Kong’s Digital Economy and Livelihood Development,” provided an in-depth analysis of the essence of the telecom spirit and its practical implementation in Hong Kong. Earlier in July, HKCT and China Telecom Global established a strategic partnership covering smart technology fields such as cybersecurity, IoT, and AI, extending to patriotic education and promoting industry-education integration and school-enterprise collaboration. This lecture was a concrete manifestation of that partnership.

In his opening remarks, Professor LAM Sam, Associate Vice President of HKCT, stated: “From the era of telegraphs and telephones to today’s ubiquitous networks, the telecommunications industry has become deeply embedded in our lives and serves as a vital window into national development. We hope that through this sharing, everyone will not only learn about cutting-edge developments in the telecom sector but also feel the strong pulse of national progress through the growth of central enterprises.”

Ms YU shared that China Telecom has been rooted in Hong Kong since 2000 and established China Telecom Global in 2012, focusing on providing integrated communication solutions for multinational enterprises and serving Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area for over two decades. She emphasized that with the strategic upgrade of “Cloudification, Digitalization, and Intelligent Empowerment,” the company is not only deepening the integration of cloud computing and data applications but also actively advancing the commercialization of AI technologies, injecting new vitality into Hong Kong’s businesses and daily life. China Telecom will continue to enhance digital infrastructure, support enterprises and government in digital transformation, and provide strong backing for Hong Kong’s development as an international innovation and technology hub. She further explained that the telecom spirit is rooted in six core principles: “Obedience to Command, Firm Belief, Serving the People Wholeheartedly, Embracing Change and Innovation, Valuing Technology, and Ensuring Security and Smooth Connectivity.” This spirit not only underpins China Telecom’s mission in national communication development but also plays a vital role in Hong Kong’s digital economy.

During the interactive Q&A session, students enthusiastically raised questions about how China Telecom demonstrates China’s technological strength in its global strategy and how it balances innovation with responsibility while driving technological progress. Ms YU responded to each question and encouraged students to seize opportunities in the new era and actively engage in the innovation and technology sector.

HKCT will continue to organize more enriching lectures and activities to deepen students’ understanding of national development strategies and elevate school-enterprise collaboration to new heights.
