Introduction
Higher Diploma in Tourism Management (Hospitality), This programme is designed to provide vocational and professional training in hospitality and tourism. With the Qualifications Framework QF Level 4, graduates can pursue professional recognitions which help them up a step on the career ladder.
According to the Hong Kong Tourism Board, visitor arrivals for 2024 reached nearly 45 million, a significant increase compared to 33 million in 2023, which is undoubtedly encouraging for the local tourism industry. To provide tourists with the best service and travel experience, continuous development of talent within the industry is crucial. This Higher Diploma programme offers professional training in hotel management and hospitality, including simulated hotel rooms, training on the "OPERA" property management system, and food and beverage hospitality training. It serves as a comprehensive pre-university/pre-employment programme for the hotel management and hospitality industry.
 
This programme is subsidised under Study Subsidy Scheme for Designated Professions/Sectors (SSSDP). In the 2025/26 academic year, a subsidy of up to $23,390 per academic year will be provided to each eligible local student admitted to this non-laboratory-based programme. The first-year tuition fee after subsidy is HK$34,610. HKCT offers the lowest tuition fee after deduction of SSSDP maximum subsidy when comparing with other institutions’ higher diploma programmes in the same discipline. Students can enjoy the lowest tuition fee of applying government recognized higher diploma programmes.

Programme Objectives

This Higher Diploma programme focuses on hotel management and hospitality, aiming to cultivate students' comprehensive mastery of professional knowledge and skills within the hotel and hospitality industry, enhancing their competitiveness and professional qualities. The curriculum emphasizes both theory and practice, utilizing simulated hotel environments and industry internships to help students gain an in-depth understanding of hotel operational procedures and customer service techniques, thereby establishing a solid foundation.

This hospitality programme also emphasizes the development of students' creative thinking, critical analysis abilities, and problem-solving skills to meet the ever-evolving challenges of the hospitality industry. Furthermore, students in the hotel hospitality programme will learn how to apply tourism and hospitality knowledge in everyday life and acquire the values and professional attitudes required by the industry.

We are committed to broadening students' international perspectives and understanding global tourism and hospitality industry trends and issues. Through theoretical learning, practical training, and internship experiences, students will acquire the necessary skills for further education and employment, preparing them thoroughly for future careers in the hotel and hospitality industry or related fields.

Our students' performance and attitude won high praise from the attendants.
Students from the Higher Diploma in Tourism Management programme visited Macau's largest hotels, the Sheraton Grand Macao and The St. Regis Macao. They toured the state-of-the-art facilities of these top-tier hotels and restaurants, gaining valuable insights into the industry

Six students from HKCT's Higher Diploma in Tourism Management programme transformed into tour guides, meticulously designing a "Super Chill Sha Tin Tour." They invited travel expert Jarvis Chow to join them as a tourist. The tour concluded with a commemorative photo with representatives from the Sha Tin District Office in front of the Sha Tin Spirit.

Articulation Path

1. After graduating with a Higher Diploma, students are eligible to apply for related bachelor’s degree programmes in hotel management-related programmes offered by overseas universities, including:

  • Sheffield Hallam University or
  • The University of Northampton or
  • The University College Birmingham in the UK
  • Related bachelor’s degree programmes offered by local or overseas universities.

2. Graduates may also apply for the following bachelor's degree programmes offered by local universities, including but not limited to:

  • The Hong Kong Polytechnic University - BSc (Hons) in Hotel Management
  • The Hong Kong Polytechnic University - BSc (Hons) Tourism and Events Management
  • The Hong Kong Polytechnic University - BSc (Hons) in Hotel and Tourism Management
  • The Hong Kong Polytechnic University - SPEED - BA (Hons) in Hospitality Management

Career Prospects

Graduates acquire knowledge and skills in the hospitality industry may join the field of tourism and hospitality, which covers travel agencies, hotels, private clubs, restaurant groups, convention and exhibition organisers, event coordination, theme parks, airline companies, airport ground handling companies and cruise companies, etc.

Supported by The Federation of Hong Kong Hotel Owners, the programme offers a wide range of internship opportunities at the international hotels, private clubs, catering organizations, convention and exhibition centres, theme parks or other relevant organizations. For examples, Grand Hyatt HK, HK Disneyland Hotel, The Fullerton Ocean Park Hotel, The St. Regis HK, Eaton Hotel HK.
Students of this Hospitality programme who perform well may be offered full-time positions by the related enterprises.

  1. Attained Level 2 in 5 HKDSE subjects1, including Chinese Language2 and English Language, and the performance in Applied Learning subjects would be considered on a case-by-case basis; or
  2. Pass in 1 A-Level or 2 AS-Level subjects in HKALE; and 5 passes in HKCEE including Chinese Language and English Language; or 
  3. Holder of Diploma Yi Jin/ Diploma of Applied Education; or
  4. Holder of Diploma for Tertiary Studies; or
  5. Holder of Pre-Associate Degree; or
  6. Holder of Diploma and 
    - in the relevant discipline at QF Level 3 with a total learning size of normally 150 QF Credits; and 
    - learning contents covering Chinese and English Languages; or
  7. Aged 21 or above with 1 year working experience; or
  8. Equivalent qualifications; 
    AND
  9. Pass the admission interview.

    1 With effective from 2024/25, 'Attained' in 'Citizenship and Social Development' (equivalent to 'Level 2' for the HKDSE subject 'Liberal Studies' before 2024/25), or the attainment of 'Level 2' in Mathematics Extended Part (Module 1 or Module 2) is also recognised as meeting the general entry requirements.
    2 'Attained' level of Applied Learning Chinese (for non-Chinese speaking students) is accepted as Chinese Language qualification for the admission, but it is not considered as an elective subject.

"Knowing my passion in cooking, HKCT’s teachers encouraged me to participate in mega cooking competition “Gourmet Lady Master Chefs.Global Challenge” to broaden my horizon. With the support of the college, I eventually landed an internship at the Michelin restaurant, even though the restaurant only occasionally offers internship to local students. I embarked my career as a preparation cook and, with great honour, I was promoted every year. It is concrete evidence that reflects the pluralistic nature of experiential learning in my study and proves the programme is in line with the vocational and professional education and training. "

This programme is subsidised under Study Subsidy Scheme for Designated Professions/Sectors (SSSDP). In the 2025/2026 academic year, a subsidy of up to $23,390 per academic year will be provided to each eligible local student admitted to this non-laboratory-based programme. The first-year tuition fee after subsidy is $34,610. Only local students are eligible for the subsidy under SSSDP.
