Applied Learning (ApL) 


Applied Learning (ApL) courses are elective subjects provided in the senior secondary curriculum. They aim to offer a diversified learning platform for preparing students to carry on their study, start working as well as understand the importance of life-long learning by enhancing their vocation-related competencies and obtaining qualification recognition.

Applied Learning Chinese [ApL(C) for non-Chinese speaking students] - Practical Chinese aims to equip non-Chinese speaking (NCS) students with foundation of using Chinese regarding listening, speaking, reading, and writing through different workplace scenarios. ApL(C) is in general accepted as an alternative Chinese Language qualification of DSE, so as to prepare them for further studies and career pursuits. Secondary school teachers, non-Chinese speaking (NCS) students and their parents are welcome to register and participate.

  3. Interactive group activities: acquire practical Chinese oral communication skills through simulated airlines service scenarios:
    • Vocabulary game: matching airline service-related words and phrases
    • Role play: create and interpret scenarios based on airline counter and in-flight conversations
    • Dialogue writing: construct the above scenarios in written form and acquire fundamental Chinese reading and writing skills (e.g. vocabulary usage, sentence construction, and identifying mistakes)
  4. Sharing by graduates: learning experiences and further study pathways

What's special of HKCT ApL courses

  • HKCT ApL provides 11 programmes for students including Pâtisserie and Café Operations, Airport Passenger Terminal Operations, Railway, Music production, Multimedia Communication, Exercise and Fitness Coaching, Creative English–Biz and Media, Vocational English, Chinese Language and 2 new programmes - Gerontech and Services, and Cybersecurity 
  • To experience the practical industrial operation in the lessons, students will study and practise in well-equipped Food and Beverage Training Centre inclusive of Integrated Training Restaurant, Creative culinary Practice Lab, Coffee Lab, Mock-up Cabin, Mock-up Front Desk and Hotel Room, Gym Room, etc.
  • HKCT ApL courses are supported by industrial partners / organisations, for instance, MTR Academy, PRET A MANGER, the international sandwich chain shop, Public Relations Hong Kong Limited (PRHK), and Hong Kong Public Relations Professionals’ Association (PRPA), etc.
  • Organized by Law's Charitable Foundation and Education Bureau, 111 HKCT ApL students were awarded the ‘2022/23 Applied Learning Scholarship’, which counted for more than 20% of the total. 7 of the outstanding students also awarded with ‘Special Award’. Download the awardee list (TC only)

Certificate in Cybersecurity (Senior Secondary Applied Learning) 

Course Features

  • The “Security Operations Centre” and “Cyber Range & Practice Centre” allow students to interact with virtual and cyber world status in real-time for experiments and training;
  • Engage in role-playing exercises to simulate real-life situations and understand the responsibilities and challenges of different roles in protecting cybersecurity;
  • Explore and test vulnerabilities and weaknesses in network systems, learning how to patch and strengthen systems;
  • Analyzing real-world cyber security cases, students gain in-depth understanding of different types of attacks and intrusions;

Course Features

  • Visit 'Gerontech and Innovation Expo' jointly organized by the government and The Hong Kong Council of Social Service, understand the latest developments of gerontech products and solutions;
  • Visit 'Jockey Club “age at home” Gerontech Education and Rental Service Centre', learn more about the practical information and have hands-on experience on gerontech equipment;
  • Visit Residential Care Homes to observe the practical use of the technological products among the elderly;

Course Features

  • Field visits to professional studios, visit to performance venue and meeting with music producers and professionals, so as to deepen students' understanding of the music industry;
  • Use professional music software and hardware for music creation in a professional studio, so as to further understand the knowledge and skills required in the industry;
  • Students appreciate local and international popular music in different periods, and compare different song styles to create their own music and performance style;

Applied Learning Subjects Result


* According to the Education Bureau Circular Memorandum No. 40/2017, applicants of Associate Degree and Higher Diploma programmes are allowed to use up to two Applied Learning (ApL) subjects in the application for entrance requirements. However, ApL Chinese (for non-Chinese speaking students) is not applicable and the existing levels of results, i.e. "Attained" and "Attained with Distinction (I) / (II)", will continue to be used.
