The course is designed for non-Chinese speaking students. Through further study, career development and daily life as learning scenarios to enhance the Chinese usage ability.
 
Local Universities and most post-secondary institutions accept ApL(C) as an alternative qualification in Chinese Language for the admission. Civil Service Bureau also accepts ApL(C) as the Chinese language proficiency requirements of relevant civil service ranks.
 
* Applied Learning (ApL) course, providing secondary school students with vocationally-oriented subjects beyond the standard curriculum. This course is suitable for non-Chinese speaking students entering Secondary Four or Five. The results are recorded on the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (HKDSE) certificate.

Programme Contents

This programme aims to build students’ foundation on use of Chinese via provision of simulated contexts of further study, career development and daily life which could enhance learning motivation towards the language and improve Chinese proficiency by guided and structural contents in Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing.

Programme Features

  • Learn and practise actual conversation of daily life and working environment through role-playing, for example, as Flight Attendant at the Mock-up Cabin, or as customers and waiters at the Food and Beverage Training Centre
  • By visiting various attractions, such as Mei Ho House, Central Market, Tai Kwun, and the CLP Clock Tower Cultural Heritage Centre, students can experience local culture, enhancing their interest in and confidence with learning Chinese
  • Grasp the main information when reading informative text such as announcements and news
  • Use vocabulary and sentences to express complete and clear information when writing practical articles
  • Teaching materials cover expressions and response capabilities under different circumstances, for examples, introduction, explanation, greeting, inquiry, discussion, invitation, appreciation, suggestion, comparison, permission, publicity, complaint, clarification, lobbying, correction, rebuttal, etc.
  • According to the Bloom education goal classification, step by step, teaching model and student-oriented, so that students with different abilities can gradually reach the learning goal
  • The instructor takes care of individual learning differences and would adjust different teaching and learning plans according to students' abilities

Performance Grading

Students' results in Applied Learning (ApL) subjects will be categorized into five levels based on their achieved scores.

 

Grading System

Students achieving an "Attained with Distinction (II)" grade in an ApL course demonstrate a performance level equivalent to Level 4 or above in a Category A subject of the HKDSE. An "Attained with Distinction (I)" grade is equivalent to Level 3 in a Category A HKDSE subject.

When applying for Higher Diploma or Associate Degree programmes, students can submit a maximum of two ApL subject grades (excluding "Applied Learning Chinese (for Non-Chinese Speaking Students)") to meet entry requirements.


Qualification Recognition

HKCT Applied Learning courses are accredited under the Hong Kong Qualifications Framework (HKQF). Upon completion, students receive both an HKDSE result and an HKQF Level 3 certificate. This provides recognised qualifications for progression to Higher Diploma, Associate Degree, and Bachelor's Degree programmes.

Articulation Path

University Grants Committee-funded institutions and most post-secondary institutions accept ApL(C) as an alternative qualification in Chinese Language for the admission of NCS students with “Attained” as the minimum grade required.

Upon completion of Form 6, students can apply for Higher Diploma in Tourism Management ( Airline ServicesHospitalityCulinary), Higher Diploma in Fitness, Coaching and Sports Management, and related programmes.

 

Career Prospects

Civil Service Bureau accepts “Attained” and “Attained with Distinction” in ApL(C) as meeting the Chinese language proficiency requirements of relevant civil service ranks.

Junior positions: hotel receptionist, recreation clubhouse officer, restaurant waiter, airport customer service officer, event assistant, station attendant, marketing assistant, activity assistant, customer service officer, retailer, disciplined service officer, etc.

Senior positions: restaurant manager, hotel manager, customer service manager, clubhouse manager, project manager, station manager, marketing manager, director of event center, disciplined services senior officer, etc.
